The Alliance of Ghanaian-Canadian Associations (AGCA) is a non-profit organization, formed from a national partnership of Ghanaian-Canadian Associations. Membership is open to Associations that represent Ghanaian-Canadians at the Municipal, Territorial, and/or Provincial levels and support AGCA’s purpose, vision, and objectives. 

For years, community leaders and members have identified the need for a unified platform to facilitate collaboration between Ghanaian-Canadian Associations, to advocate for and act on common issues impacting our communities. The COVID-19 pandemic is a prime example of such an issue. Among various items, the pandemic has highlighted the need for race-based data to support public health policies and practices. It has also highlighted the need for targeted interventions and increased education offered by relatable professionals/experts within our communities. In addition, we realized that this collaboration would go a long way to support initiatives geared at broadening and deepening the bilateral ties between Ghana and Canada.

During his tour of duty as High Commissioner of Ghana to Canada between 2017 to 2020, His Excellency Mr. Ayikoi Otoo had discussions with Togbui Nyaho Tamakloe VI (Mr. Keli Tamakloe), President of the Ghana Friendship Association of Edmonton about the creation of a platform for information dissemination and communication between the High Commission and Association Presidents. This led to the birth of the informal WhatsApp group, the Alliance of Ghanaian Association Presidents in Canada (AGAPIC), on February 18, 2019.

From December 2020, AGAPIC members, in collaboration with the Ghana High Commission in Ottawa, began formal conversations around working to formalize and recalibrate the group. On January 9, 2021, during a maiden meeting of AGAPIC members, a Working Group was formed. The group was provided with Terms of Reference (TOR) and was tasked with exploring a viable option for formalizing and recalibrating AGAPIC. After careful deliberations and consultations, the Alliance of Ghanaian-Canadian Associations was Incorporated under the Canada Not-for-Profit Act, on July 02, 2021.

Since his arrival in September 2021, His Excellency Mr. Anselm Ransford Sowah, Ghana’s High Commissioner-designate to Canada has bolstered the process towards the formal inauguration of AGCA on October 30, 2021.

Mission

The Alliance of Ghanaian-Canadian Associations seeks to foster collaboration among member Associations and Stakeholders, for the socio-economic advancement and wellbeing of all.

Objectives

1. To promote the socio-economic well-being of communities across Canada by facilitating access to resources. 
2. To provide a unified platform for representation of the interests of member associations.
3. To liaise and collaborate with the Ghana High Commission and other stakeholders in various areas, including health, culture, education, trade, and migration. 
4. To help broaden and deepen the bilateral ties between Ghana and Canada.
5. To empower and build capacity within member organizations. 
6. To facilitate the formation of new Ghanaian associations at the municipal, territorial, and/or provincial levels in Canada.
7. To promote diversity and inclusion in Canada.
8. To serve as a conduit for arbitration and conflict resolution for member Associations.
